Some Things Even Obama Can't Transcend

The "multigenerational, multiracial crowds" who flock to Barack Obama suggest a change is imminent, and fuel a hope that the partisan stalemate of George W. Bush's presidency will soon be over. Yet "partysanship" remains a source of disillusion among voters. Both Democrats and Republicans are less determined to change America than to be elected at any cost. The left needs to "learn who their enemy is," and form a true progressive agenda, before it can talk about "transcending" everyday struggles. Younge's Utopian vision of less rancorous politics is inspiring, yet it bears little reality to contemporary American society.
